Cleanroom and CO₂ incubator environmental monitoring
A cleanroom is defended by pressure cascade, air changes and discipline. Two of those three leave a data trail — and the one that does not is the reason you monitor the other two continuously.
Non-viable environmental monitoring in a cleanroom is about proving that the physical controls held. Differential pressure between grades is the primary barrier against ingress, and it fails in undramatic ways: a door left ajar, a loaded terminal filter, a fan speed drifting after maintenance. Temperature and humidity matter both for product and for the gowned operator whose discipline degrades when the room is uncomfortable.
The 2022 revision of EU GMP Annex 1 pushed environmental monitoring towards a continuous, risk-based contamination control strategy rather than periodic sampling, and Revised Schedule M brings Indian manufacturers into the same expectation of documented, data-integrity-controlled environmental evidence. In practice that means continuous ΔP and T/RH records with alarms, correlated with the room's activity.
Adjacent to the cleanroom, CO₂ incubators present a related problem: a 37 °C, 5 % CO₂, high-humidity environment where a depleted gas cylinder silently ends a culture. ABH-300-AQ carries CO₂, particulate and VOC channels alongside temperature, humidity and pressure in a vented IP54 enclosure.
The expectations behind the record
What an inspector or auditor looks for in this use case, and the framework each expectation comes from.
Continuous monitoring driven by a contamination control strategy
Monitoring locations, parameters and frequencies are justified by documented risk assessment rather than convention, and critical parameters are monitored continuously with alert and action limits.
Pressure cascade maintained and evidenced between grades
Differential pressure between adjacent classified areas is monitored continuously with alarms, and the record shows the cascade held during operations — including during material and personnel transfers.
Classification and ongoing monitoring kept distinct
Periodic classification to ISO 14644-1 establishes the grade; routine monitoring demonstrates the state is maintained between classifications. The two datasets are complementary, not interchangeable.
Data integrity controls on the environmental record
Environmental data supporting batch release is GxP data: access-controlled, audit-trailed, and not editable after the fact. Revised Schedule M makes computerised-system controls explicit for Indian sites.
The failure modes nobody budgets for
Every one of these is a real reason monitoring programmes lose their audit trail — or lose the trust of the people who work with them.
ΔP alarms that everyone has learned to ignore
Every airlock transfer moves the differential. Threshold-only alarming on a busy transfer corridor produces noise, and noise produces disabled alarms.
Instruments that cannot be in the room
Anything placed in a classified area has to be cleanable, non-shedding and qualified. A general-purpose sensor in a plastic box is a contamination risk and an audit finding.
CO₂ incubators failing on gas, not on temperature
The cabinet holds 37 °C perfectly while the CO₂ concentration falls away with the cylinder. Temperature-only monitoring reports a healthy incubator and a dead culture.
Separate systems for pressure, temperature and particles
Three vendors, three clocks and three export formats make correlating a contamination excursion with the conditions around it a manual investigation.
Engineered for this, specifically
Each point below maps to a documented platform behaviour — not a marketing promise.
Multi-parameter on one instrument and one clock
ABH-300-AQ measures CO₂, particulate and VOC alongside temperature, humidity and barometric pressure in a vented IP54 build — so a room's parameters correlate natively instead of across three exports.
Stateful rules for a corridor that is supposed to move
Duration and area-under-curve rules distinguish a five-second airlock transfer from a door left open, which is what makes continuous ΔP alarming survivable for the people who work there.
CO₂ incubators monitored on the parameter that fails
A CO₂ channel alongside temperature and humidity catches cylinder depletion and door-seal loss, with alerts routed the same way as any other excursion.
Electronics outside, sensing where it belongs
Where the instrument cannot be in the classified space, Class-A PT100 probes on 3 m, 5 m or 10 m cables put the measuring point inside while the logger stays outside — the same split used for freezers and chambers.
One audit chain across every parameter
Readings from every channel, alarms, acknowledgements and e-signatures enter a single SHA-256 chain, so an investigation reads one record rather than reconciling several.
The ABH loggers for this job
Abhilekh runs its own logger line end to end — one manufacturer owns the chain from probe accuracy to the signed record.
- ▸PRB-PT100-3W — Class-A immersion probe where the logger must stay outside
The ABH line is at the design-frozen, pre-production stage. Every battery-life, drop, thermal and IP figure is a calculated or simulated design estimate, and the regulatory marks referenced on this site are a certification roadmap — not held certificates.
